WW1 Right Plaque.

Age: 20 Date of Death: 20/09/1918 Service No: 42385 Additional information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. George Maplethorpe, of West End, Ulceby, Lincs. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: VIII. K. 17. Cemetery: NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY – Germany.

The situation of cemetery and date of death indicate that this serviceman died in Germany before the end of the war. Probably died whilst a prisoner of war of wounds, injuries or natural causes. The Great Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918/20 was rampant worldwide at this time.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: XVII. A. 12. Cemetery: COLOGNE SOUTHERN CEMETERY – Germany.

The situation of cemetery and date of death indicate that this serviceman died in Germany before the end of the war. Probably died whilst a prisoner of war of wounds, injuries or natural causes.

 

3/ SHARPLEY, HENRY Initials: H Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Lieutenant Regiment/Service: Royal Field Artillery Unit Text: "A" 66th Trench Mortar Bty. Age: 24 Date of Death: 24/03/1918 Additional information: Son of May Sharpley, of Ulceby, Lincs, and the late Henry Sharpley. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: I. B. 7. Cemetery: BLARGIES COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION - France

The situation of this cemetery indicate that this was not a Front Line death. Possibly died of wounds, injuries or illness at a Field Hospital in the vicinity.

 

4/ SHAW, GEORGE Initials: G Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Lincolnshire Regiment Unit Text: 2nd Bn. Age: 24 Date of Death: 01/07/1916 Service No: 9125 Additional information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Shaw, of Station Rd., Ulceby, Lincs. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 1 C. Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL - Belgium.

This serviceman was Missing in Action and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. On the 1st day of Battle of the Somme - 1st July 1916. 8th Division, 25th Brigade. Lincolnshire Regt 2nd Bn advanced towards Ovillers. They took heavy casualties across No Man’s Land but made the German trenches where they came under continuous counter attack and were pressed  back.  With no possibility of reinforcements the remains of the Battalion withdrew in good order later that day.

On this day the Lincolnshire Regiment 2nd Battalion Commanding Officer, Lt Col Reginald Bastard, performed prodigious feats of gallantry crossing No Man’s Land no less than 4 times to lead his men personally and collect reinforcements. He was awarded well earned bar to his DSO for his feats of leadership that day.

Date of Death: 26/03/1917 Service No: TF/201099 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panels 26 and 27. Memorial: JERUSALEM MEMORIAL - Palestine.

Missing in action and commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial. The date coincides with the First Battle of Gaza in Palestine.

 

6/ Possibly - Name: TAYLER Initials: H F Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Lieutenant Regiment/Service: Royal Engineers Date of Death: 08/11/1918 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: 123. 24532. Cemetery: WEST NORWOOD CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM - UK

Died in UK. Possibly died of wounds received at the Front or possible accident, illness or natural causes.  The Great Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918/20 was rampant worldwide at this time.
