Adwalton Moor pics

The Sieges of Bradford - Adwalton Moor Pictures. Some photographs from the site of the battle to give a general impression of the area and terrain.

View looking north west over which Parliamentarian forces advanced. Whiskett Hill, where preliminary skirmishing took place between advanced units of both armies, is in the distance.

Land over which Parliamentarian forces advanced south east towards Adwalton Moor.

Area where Royalist infantry made a stand and were driven back by Parliamentarians onto Hungar Hill at the rear of this photo.

View from the ridge on Hungar Hill where the Royalist overlooked the Parliamentarian line. The local library is the building in the middle foreground. This marks a point roughly equidistant between both lines. The white building further back approximately marks the Parliamentarian line

View from the centre of the Royalist line on the ridge overlooking the Parliamentarian right flank.

Sir Thomas Fairfax and his force on the right of the line were positioned in the area around the large building.

View up to the Royalist positions on the ridge of Hungar Hill.

Gifford, on the Parliamentarian left flank, attacked here and was finally halted and then broken by a charge of pike from Newcastle’s Own Regiment led by Colonel Kirton (Skirton?). See note below

Note :-The local library is the white building in the middle and a good place to start any battlefield walks. There is a marker stone adjacent  the car park and a plaque explaining events on the library wall. The stone in the foreground is another of the 4 battlefield marker stones each with a plaque giving details of events at that point.

The playing fields adjacent to the library where Gifford’s men were held and then broken by the Royalist pike men. In the background is the large building which roughly marks the right flank of the Parliamentarian line.
